Pilar Palomares |

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) and the Institute of Mexicans Abroad (IME), in collaboration with the Embassy of Mexico in Belgium and Switzerland, organized the 1st Conversation of Mexican Migrant Women in Europe on the 18th and July 19, 2023 in Brussels, Belgium.

I participated in this 1st. Conversation of Mexican Migrant Women in Europe 2023 at the entrepreneurship round table, alongside 8 other businesswomen.

The event featured the participation of 37 outstanding women in areas such as health, science, education, entrepreneurship and art, among others. It sought to strengthen ties and support networks among Mexican migrant women, with the support of 22 diplomatic and consular representations of Mexico in the European Union.

During the inauguration, the importance of actions to empower women, promote access to rights and prevent gender violence was emphasized. Six thematic panels were addressed, including migration and mental health, women's rights in Europe, professional development, entrepreneurship, women in art and women in science.

Counselor Vanessa Calva Ruiz highlighted the “Policy for Linkage and Comprehensive Attention to Women” (VAIM), which seeks to support women in the context of migration. At the closing, the SRE's commitment to a feminist foreign policy was reiterated and the implementation of the VAIM in all Mexican representations was announced.

Chancellor Alicia Bárcena Ibarra recognized the work of the IME and highlighted the importance of creating policies to strengthen the autonomy of Mexican women abroad. She committed to working from a Feminist Foreign Policy that seeks substantive equality and grants the same opportunities and rights to her fellow citizens. She highlighted the importance of listening to women living outside the country to address problems such as glass ceilings, economic dependency and gender gaps.
